Saturday Arts Social is a multi-arts programme and morning tea designed for our 60+ community. We gather every Saturday morning for a broad programme of events including concerts, art workshops, dance/movement classes and artist talks. Next event: Saturday 10 May, 10:30am - 12:30pm
Upcoming Programmes:
10 May - TDC69 and TypeHere Artist Talk with Kaan Hinni, Lloyd Osborne and Shabnam Shiwan
Type Here with Lloyd Osborne & Shabnam Shiwan
In 2024, Lloyd and Shabnam launched Type Here / Aotearoa Now, a typographic poster competition and exhibition celebrating contemporary voices through type. They'll share insights on the exhibition, what makes a compelling typographic poster, and highlight standout entries from across the motu.
Toitū Te Tiriti with Kaan Hiini
Designer Kaan Hiini speaks to his winning poster Toitū Te Tiriti and his approach to typography grounded in Te Ao Māori. His practice blends bold visual storytelling with deep cultural values to challenge and evolve the design narrative in Aotearoa.
17 May - Belly Dancing with Bee Sadalah
Be taken on a captivating journey through the centuries, exploring the rich history and traditions of bellydance. About Bee Sadalah:
With over 25 years of experience, Bee Sadalah is a passionate belly dancer, teacher, choreographer, and director of the Desert Roses - a celebration of women of all ages, shapes, and backgrounds. Her journey began in Brazil and has flourished across cultures, landing in Queenstown in 2016 where she became the town’s pioneer of belly dance. Bee brings warmth, joy, and connection to every class, helping you build confidence, community, and well-being through the art of dance.
24 May - Love Notes: In Conversation with Ed Cruikshank
Discover Ed’s interactive postbox artwork, Love Notes - an invitation to write and send messages of connection, compassion and peace. Ed will share the inspiration behind the project, and how his handcrafted objects and design philosophy aim to invite curiosity, spark conversations, and encourage questions to our belief systems which can nurture more tolerance and peace in our lives. Join this reflective conversation about the power of unexpected connections to challenge perspectives and build greater empathy.
About Ed Cruikshank:
Ed Cruikshank studied furniture making and industrial design in London before spending ten years creating unique furniture and objects while working with David Linley. He moved to Queenstown in 2001, where he established his own design practice. Since 2010, Ed has been infusing coded texts into his pieces. The meaning behind the words always relates to how heightened communication and deeper understanding can bring more love, unity, and peace to our lives.
