Saturday Arts Social is a multi-arts programme and morning tea designed for our 60+ community. We gather every Saturday morning for a broad programme of events including concerts, art workshops, dance/movement classes and artist talks. Next event: Saturday 22 August, 10:30am.
Upcoming Programmes:
22 August: Plant Care and Potting Workshop (with QT Plant Guys)
In celebration of National Poetry Day, join us for a relaxed and creative morning of Poetic Illustration. Natasya from QLDC Libraries will provide a poem for you to illustrate on paper – each person will receive a copy to respond to in their own way. There's no right or wrong approach – just listen to the words, let them speak to you, and see what shapes, colours, and images come to mind. No experience needed – just bring yourself and your curiosity. Whether you're a seasoned artist or haven't picked up a pencil in years, this session is all about expression, connection, and giving it a go. Come along and celebrate the joy of poetry and art together.
29 August: Connect & Thrive Wellbeing Workshop (with Headlight)
In this session, we invite you to take a moment to check in with yourself, and connect with others. Led by our facilitator through the lens of her own lived-experience, this interactive, conversational session invites you to reflect on mental wellbeing tools you already possess, and practice how to access them in a way to best benefit you as well as support friends and family.
Together we will:
- Share what ‘wellbeing’ means to each one of us
- Reflect on how the ‘5 ways to wellbeing’ show up in our lives
- Practice wellbeing and connection through simple exercises
- Create an artistic representation of a pathway to wellbeing for you (and your community) to Connect & Thrive
5 September: Rising with Tenderness - Early Spring Workshop
You are warmly invited to come and move with me as we celebrate the changing season. With gentle guidance, I will introduce you to dance movement therapy ideas inspired by Marianne Chace (warm up, theme & closure) as well as the Laban Movement Analyse theories ( LMA) playing around 'Rising & Sinking 'polarities.' The session will cover:
- Gentle arrival and grounding
- Breath and mobility warm-up
- Seated or standing improvisation with spring imagery
- Mirroring duos
- Calm closing and reflection.
This is an invitation and all the above is optional. This session will be a heartfelt, fun, compassionate and welcoming space in which to explore sensations & emotions through your dance and movement.
12 September: Doodle, Create and Unwind (with Kelly Roos)
In this session, participants will explore the relaxing and enjoyable art of doodling with fine line pens. In this creative workshop, experiment with lines, shapes, patterns and repeated designs to create your own unique artwork. We’ll use simple outlines as a starting point, which could include animals, plants, objects or abstract shapes, before filling them with your own patterns and ideas. No previous drawing experience is needed — just bring your curiosity and have fun exploring where a line can take you!
19 September: Turn Up the Music performance
In this session, participants will hear and celebrate the musical learning of a section of our students. Expect everything from beginners to intermediate students and some exciting talent!
26 September: Journalling as Self Care (with Lizanne Knights)
Following Lizanne’s first journalling session earlier this year, she will provide the opportunity for reflection on your journaling experience to date, bearing in mind that your journal always meets you where you are in life and without judgement.
Whilst not exclusively for those who journal regularly or who have done so during the last six months, this will be a safe space to share experiences. There will be an opportunity to discuss what aids and what distracts from your journaling .
Do come along (with your journal) if you want to gain insights and ideas to deepen your practice and/ or you are curious to explore journaling further.
