Saturday Arts Social is a multi-arts programme and morning tea designed for our 60+ community. We gather every Saturday morning for a broad programme of events including concerts, art workshops, dance/movement classes and artist talks. Next event: Saturday 18 April, 10:30am.

Upcoming Programmes:

18 April: Exploring Colour and Texture with Emma Peers

In this relaxed and playful workshop, participants will explore a variety of art materials and discover the joy of experimentation. Through simple exercises, we will try different mark-making techniques using paint, markers, collage, and drawing tools. The focus is on curiosity and creativity rather than perfect results. Series 2 - Save the date 9 May. The topic is Creative Greeting Cards: Exploring Colour & Texture.

About your facilitator:

  • Emma  Peers is an artist, illustrator and resident artist at Te Atamira.  Through her practice, Emma holds emotion,  memory, and stories that are often difficult to put into words. Working  primarily with paint, Emma experiments with movement, her process is  expressive and intuitive, allowing the paint to move, drip, and shift as she  works, letting each layer reveal something new.

25 April: no session, public holiday.

2 May: 'Whakapapa' by Jolt Dance

Join the Jolt Dance company team for a dynamic workshop that uses music and movement to foster connection, communication, and creativity — creating a space grounded in freedom, exploration, and joy. Designed to be welcoming, inclusive, and accessible for people with a wide range of abilities and support needs, this workshop supports imaginative expression through:

  • Developing body awareness, focus, connection, and musicality
  • Encouraging engagement through non-verbal communication, touch, and play
  • Exploring music as both landscape and language
  • Nurturing creativity by expressing and shaping individual ideas

About your facilitator:

  • Jolt Dance Company is an inclusive Christchurch-based organisation that has been leading the way in innovative, disability-led dance practice since 2001. Their work creates meaningful opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to train, perform, and take on leadership roles — challenging traditional perceptions of dance while celebrating each individual’s creative voice.

9 May: Creative Greeting Cards (with Emma Peers)

In this creative session, participants will use colour, texture, and simple mark-making techniques to design a series of unique abstract greeting cards. Drawing on playful approaches to paint, pattern, and layering, we will transform small artworks into beautiful handmade cards that can be shared with friends and family.

16 May: Beyond the Peaks - Pakistan, Unfiltered and Unseen (with Glen Howey)

Having spent five weeks exploring a country that many see it's dangerous and uncharted, the hospitality and warmth I found would change anybody's view. Pakistan is a country of many contradictions, not just photographically challenging, but photographically rewarding.
