Saturday Arts Social is a multi-arts programme and morning tea designed for our 60+ community. We gather every Saturday morning for a broad programme of events including concerts, art workshops, dance/movement classes and artist talks. Next event: Saturday 4 April, 10:30am.
Upcoming Programmes:
4 April: 'Happy Places' Doodle Workshop
In this session, participants will explore bringing their imagination to life and celebrating a Place that brings them joy with doodles. Using fine liners, we will start off with simple doodles and build up in complexity following step-by-step guidance. Participants will leave with an illustration of a place or scene which brings them joy. No drawing experience necessary, all are welcome.
About your facilitator:
- Meg is an illustrator and Primary School teacher based in rural Southland. Meg specializes in bringing joy to communities with giant, fun, doodle-style interactive murals where participants are invited to collaborate and leave their mark. She has spent the last two years hosting these murals at various events in Southland and Central Otago, as well as painting murals for Schools. Meg is a passionate teacher who enjoys bringing in others to share the joy of art.
11 April: Musical storytelling with Daniel Verstappen
The day after a concert for the Queenstown community, internationally-acclaimed pianist and composer Daniel Verstappen will be putting on a special performance for our Saturday Arts Social community! Known for his distinctive cinematic and neoclassical musical language, Verstappen's music bridges classical piano tradition with filmic storytelling, contemporary composition, and cross-cultural collaboration. His compositions and arrangements are often described as emotionally layered, evocative, and highly visual, with a strong sense of narrative flow, rhythm, and atmosphere. Alongside his solo projects, he frequently collaborates with orchestras, choirs, and local artists, using music as a vehicle for cultural dialogue and connection.
18 April: Exploring Colour and Texture with Emma Peers
In this relaxed and playful workshop, participants will explore a variety of art materials and discover the joy of experimentation. Through simple exercises, we will try different mark-making techniques using paint, markers, collage, and drawing tools. The focus is on curiosity and creativity rather than perfect results. Series 2 - Save the date 9 May. The topic is Creative Greeting Cards: Exploring Colour & Texture.
25 April: no session, public holiday.
