Patterns in Symmetry is a hands-on workshop that explores symmetry as a universal pattern language found in nature, textiles, architecture, and cultural design.

Through pattern‑making, participants will experiment with made and ready‑made stamps, ink pads, rotational pathways, and guided mark‑making techniques to discover how simple shapes and repeated gestures can evolve into intricate, layered designs. These individual explorations can lead to a potentially collaborative artwork. Along the way, they will explore bilateral and rotational symmetry, repeated units, creative decision-making, and embodied pattern creation through ink-based stamping.

Led by Grant Whibley,a New Zealand artist whose practice explores symmetry through drawing, repetition, and intuitive mark-making, the workshop extends his contemporary practice into a collaborative community setting. Grant investigates how mirrored forms generate complex visual and emotional structures, combining traditional printmaking with innovative approaches to rotational design. His work examines the relationship between mathematics, movement, and visual art, and he has exhibited throughout New Zealand while facilitating workshops that make complex artistic ideas accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for participants of all experience levels.
