Internationally acclaimed environmental artists Martin Hill and Philippa Jones have focussed their work on the ecological /climate crisis for three decades. Burning Issues is drawn from their body of work made in the mountains of the Southern Lakes where they live.
They are inspired by the natural wilderness from which they create ephemeral sculptures from natural materials that return to nature after being photographed by Hill. This circular regenerative material flow in natural systems is the formula for redesigning human systems that eliminate waste, carbon emissions and pollution that is causing the ecological climate emergency. By making, exhibiting and publishing their work they hope to help inspire the change to an ecological model of progress that does not destroy the living world on which all life relies.
Please join us for the opening Friday 30 October, 6.30pm.
The exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday 31 October.
Martin Hill and Philippa Jones have collaborated for three decades making ephemeral environmental sculptures in nature that return to nature. Nothing remains except Hill’s photographs.
Their book, Earth to Earth 2007 featured sculpture photographs alongside writings from world leaders in sustainable design. A film Delicate Canvas followed Hill and Jones’ art practice in the New Zealand mountains over a year. The BBC’s Nature and Us, a history through art series showed them creating work high in the Southern Alps of New Zealand where they live.
Fine Line Project, 1995-2019, published 2021, consists of a symbolic line drawn around the earth linking ephemeral sculptures made on 12 high points. Interconnectivity, circularity, regeneration by design and biomimicry are its themes.
Their projects are featured online in Photo Anthology – the living encyclopaedia of the history and art of photography.
