EXHIBITIONS

Te Atamira has two main gallery spaces, Whakaari and Manaaki Nui.

Our galleries are free to visit during opening hours and present a constantly evolving programme of visual, material and object arts.

Whakaari, our larger gallery, is our primary space for significant exhibitions and work that is conceptually strong, visually compelling, ambitious or experimental. Manaaki Nui also presents high-quality contemporary exhibitions, while also lending itself particularly to project-based work, community participation, education and creative activation.

We present approximately four exhibitions each year in Whakaari and seven in Manaaki Nui, alongside exhibitions with partner organisations such as Queenstown Arts Society and Mīharo Murihiku Trust.

Exhibition openings are free and everyone is welcome. These celebrations, alongside artist talks, workshops and other opportunities to engage with our exhibitions, are shared through our What’s On page, social media and other channels. Join our mailing list to stay up to date.

A UNIQUE EXHIBITION SPACE

Exhibiting at Te Atamira offers artists the opportunity to have their work encountered by an unusually broad spectrum of people – from established arts audiences to those discovering contemporary art for the first time.

As a unique multi-arts centre welcoming more than 2,000 people through our doors each week, Te Atamira creates meaningful access to the arts every day. Our exhibitions sit within a wider creative ecosystem spanning visual art, education, performance, music, kōrero and community programming, connecting people with creativity from discovery through to mastery.

During school holidays, our galleries fill with children learning how to look at, reflect on and respond to art. World-class events such as At the World’s Edge Festival take place within our gallery spaces, bringing music and visual art into dialogue. Visitors arriving for a class, performance, community programme or our onsite shop encounter exhibitions as part of their everyday experience of Te Atamira.

We are proud to platform diverse artistic voices, support artists at different stages of practice, and create opportunities for ambitious and compelling work to connect with our community. Our aim is not simply to present exhibitions, but to nurture deep audience connection – creating experiences that challenge, inspire, enrich and invite people into the arts, whatever their previous level of familiarity.
