Artist's Statement:

My work depicts native New Zealand flora and fauna. I am drawn to the many endemic species that are often overlooked because they are not fluffy or cute. These “lesser known natives' have become a metaphor for my own bicultural identity.

I see the loss of cultural harvesting practice and the decline of our native species as linked and by reclaiming these traditions we might have a positive impact on the world we pass on to our tamariki.

In 2014, inspired by a recent wānanga with Paemanu Ngāi Tahu Contemporary Artists' group, I decided to go back to making art by hand. Limited by a very small space and a 2-year-old, I began making prints of native flora and fauna. At first I printed everything by hand with a spoon but then a friend gifted me a restored cast iron book press which meant I could do larger editions.

The decision to go back to making art by hand rather than digital print was partly because I wanted to find my own voice as an artist. I also had a need to create something with my hands; to feel the tactile connection to my work. When working with native materials and practices I am searching for a tactile connection with the traditions of my tipuna.

Much of Ngāi Tahu culture has been hidden or lost forever. But there are researchers and writers who are finding clues from the past that will guide us into the future.
