Wasabi Choir
Wasabi is a community choir based in Queenstown that unites people from various cultural backgrounds through the power of music. Founded in 2015, Wasabi was initially established to help younger generations of Japanese in New Zealand connect with their heritage through traditional Japanese songs. Since then, the group has evolved into a vibrant, multicultural ensemble, welcoming members of all nationalities who share a love for music and harmony.
Led by Meg Hirata, who arranges and directs with a contagious smile, Wasabi blends Japanese and Western music—from traditional folk songs to contemporary pop and heartfelt ballads. The group’s goal is to create music that touches the soul, builds bridges between cultures, and uplifts both singers and listeners alike.
At the heart of Wasabi is a deep belief that singing can make the world a better place, one note, one voice, one heart at a time. Whether performing on stage or rehearsing together, Wasabi is more than a choir; it’s a musical family that celebrates connection, diversity, and the joy of shared expression.
Wasabi rehearses every Friday (except during school holidays) 7-9pm at Te Atamira and is always open to welcoming new voices. No formal experience is needed—just a love for singing and a willingness to grow together.
We welcome singers of all abilities, as long as they bring a positive and cheerful energy to the group. It’s the joy and fun of singing together that really matters to us!
