SUMMARY:AWE+ Emerging Artist Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Mozart quietly writes under Michael Haydn’s name so his ailing friend can fulfil a commission. AWE 2026 Emerging Composer Rafael Hosking’s The shape of upper branches\, July 2026 for string quartet\, echoes the riroriro’s song as it shifts from region to region across Aotearoa. Ravel playfully stretches the serenade\, while Korngold‘s wartime melody\, later the theme of his Piano Quintet’s slow movement heard at AWE 2026’s closing concert\, reflects on separation and enduring connection. Fifteen-year-old Beethoven closes with an early glimpse of a voice already reshaping the traditions it inherited. \n‍ \nPerformers AWE 2026 Emerging Artists \n\nEsther Oh – Violin\nSolace Ward – Viola\nBoudewijn Keenan – Cello\nHana Tani – Piano

SUMMARY:Winterstellar: At the Edge of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Winterstellar Charitable Trust is a charity working to protect Central Otago’s night skies\, and Professor Brian Boyle is a renowned astronomer behind Nobel prize–winning research\, who has spent years working alongside them. Their efforts recently secured Dark Sky status for the Kawarau Gibbston International Night Sky Park. This is the highest rating a night sky can hold\, where a stretch of sky is protected simply for what it is and for what it lets us see. That conversation is where Radiance was born\, a programme about cosmic lines  and about what looking up at them stirs in us. \nJoin us for what will be an illuminating talk as Professor Boyle lights up Central Otago’s night skies.

SUMMARY:Whenu ki te Whenua | The Strands that Connect Us to the Land
DESCRIPTION:Each work carries kōrero of resource\, process\, whakapapa\, and belonging\, showing how ancestral practice continues to move\, breathe\, and take form in the present. Bringing together learning\, creativity\, and community across the Whakatipu Basin and Murihiku\, Whenu Ki Te Whenua celebrates tauira as emerging kaitiaki of knowledge. Their hands carry forward mātauranga\, transforming natural materials into taonga rich with memory\, skill\, and cultural expression. \nAt the beginning of this journey is Nanny Roka\, who planted the seeds of Poipoia te Kākano kia Puāwai and set each tauira upon a poutama — a pathway of learning\, growth\, and discovery. Like its ascending steps\, each lesson and achievement builds upon the last\, guiding tauira to where they stand today. \nPresented across three levels of study\, the works trace each student’s creative journey — from early discovery to confident practice. Through raranga and whatu\, every whenu becomes a line of whakapapa\, every pattern a voice\, and every kete or kākahu a vessel for connection to whenua and whānau. At its heart is Whiria te Tāngata — the weaving together of people. \nWe warmly invite the community to Te Atamira to experience the wairua\, beauty\, and strength woven through each taonga\, and to witness how the strands of culture\, learning\, and place continue to bind us together. \n‍ \n“E kore e taea e te whenu kotahi ki te raranga i te whāriki kia mōhio tātou ki a tātou.” \n“The tapestry of understanding cannot be woven by one strand alone.”

SUMMARY:Songsmiths of the South | Live at Te Atamira
DESCRIPTION:The project\, facilitated by Te Atamira supported by the Stout Trust and Lotteries\, emerged from a desire to cultivate a stronger sense of musical community in Tāhuna Queenstown – creating space for musicians\, songwriters and soundmakers from across the region to come together\, share\, listen and collaborate. \nLed by local songwriter\, producer and engineer Solomon Crook\, the project brought local artists together through a series of collaborative writing sessions\, exploring songwriting in relation to Tāhuna – its mountains\, waters and light. \nAcross the project\, artists were given space to write\, experiment\, listen and collaborate\, drawing from their own experiences and their relationship with the environment around them. \n  \nThe result is a community album of original music\, with each song carrying its own perspective while\, together\, forming a collective expression of the people and environment that shaped it. \n  \nNow\, the Songsmiths come together at Te Atamira to bring this work to life\, taking the project from collaborative creative development into a shared live experience for the community. Expect an evening of original music\, storytelling and collaboration\, featuring a diverse range of voices\, instruments and musical practices. The artists will share the songs created through the project\, alongside stories of the places\, experiences and ideas that inspired them. \n  \nFrom the mountains and waters of Queenstown Lakes to the people who call this place home\, Songsmiths of the South is a musical portrait of Tāhuna\, created through connection\, collaboration and a shared love of music. \n  \nMeet the Songsmiths \nSolomon Crook \nPania Witoko \nMark Wilson \nMatt Tyrrell \nErica Hastie \nShane Woolridge \nLeanne Malcolm \nMala Januszkiewicz \nViolet Hirst \nPaul Marcham \nClaire Forrestor \nBreda McCarthy \nTom Maxwell \nJulian Shine \nGeorge Newhouse \nNaima Fifita
