SUMMARY:The Adam Portraiture Awards 2026
DESCRIPTION:Portraits ask us to spend time with the likeness of another person. They invite us to look beyond appearance and consider identity\, relationships\, memory and the many ways a person can be represented. While every portrait begins with an individual\, together they become something larger: a record of the people\, communities and stories that shape a place and a moment in time. \n‍ \nThe Adam Portraiture Award is Aotearoa New Zealand’s premier award for painted portraiture. Presented biennially by the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata\, the award has become one of the country’s most significant and anticipated art prizes. Since its inception in 2000\, it has celebrated excellence in contemporary portraiture while creating an evolving record of Aotearoa through the people artists choose to paint. Since 2006\, each winning work has been acquired into the New Zealand Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection. \nThe Adam Portraiture Awards are generously supported by The Adam Foundation\, with Principal Partners Wellington City Council and Creative New Zealand\, and Supporting Partner The Sargood Bequest\, the award provides artists from across Aotearoa with the opportunity to exhibit their work on a national stage. \nFeaturing works by established and emerging artists from across the country\, The Adam Portraiture Award 2026 showcases the diversity of contemporary portrait painting in Aotearoa. From intimate studies of family and friends to portraits that examine culture\, history\, identity and belonging\, the exhibition reveals the many possibilities of portraiture today. Collectively\, the selected works offer a compelling snapshot of contemporary New Zealand through the people who inhabit it. \nIf you are visually impaired and would like to access audio descriptions during your visit via Bluetooth headphones\, please contact Hayley at exhibitions@teatamira.nz to book a suitable time. \nExhibition developed and toured by the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nImage: Duncan Pepe Long\, Solomon Tāmehana\, 2026\, oil on wood (winner)

SUMMARY:Mīharo: Legends of Our Lands – Our People\, Our Places\, Our Stories
DESCRIPTION:Stories connect us to the people who came before us\, the places that shape us and the communities to which we belong. Passed from one generation to the next\, they carry histories\, knowledge\, traditions and ways of understanding the world. \nFor Māori and Pasifika peoples\, storytelling plays an important role in sharing cultural knowledge across generations. Stories of ancestors\, significant events\, inspiring people and the formation and naming of places help to shape identity and strengthen connections between people\, culture and whenua. \nLegends of Our Lands – Our People\, Our Places\, Our Stories brings together artworks by tamariki and rangatahi from Early Childhood\, Primary and Secondary education\, alongside artists in Mīharo’s open 18–25-year-oldcategory. Through imagery\, symbolism and a range of creative approaches\, participants explore the identities\, people\, places and stories that hold meaning for them. \nPresented as part of Mīharo’s annual art awards and exhibition\, the selected works celebrate the imagination of young artists and the many ways stories and cultural knowledge can be interpreted and shared through art. For more information\, visit the Mīharo website. \nThe opening for the show and awards will be presented on Wednesday 23 September at 5.30pm please feel welcome to attend. \nImage: The Elements of our Connection by Anahera Kemara. SUMMARY:Whenu ki te Whenua | The Strands that Connect Us to the Land
DESCRIPTION:Each work carries kōrero of resource\, process\, whakapapa\, and belonging\, showing how ancestral practice continues to move\, breathe\, and take form in the present. Bringing together learning\, creativity\, and community across the Whakatipu Basin and Murihiku\, Whenu Ki Te Whenua celebrates tauira as emerging kaitiaki of knowledge. Their hands carry forward mātauranga\, transforming natural materials into taonga rich with memory\, skill\, and cultural expression. \nAt the beginning of this journey is Nanny Roka\, who planted the seeds of Poipoia te Kākano kia Puāwai and set each tauira upon a poutama — a pathway of learning\, growth\, and discovery. Like its ascending steps\, each lesson and achievement builds upon the last\, guiding tauira to where they stand today. \nPresented across three levels of study\, the works trace each student’s creative journey — from early discovery to confident practice. Through raranga and whatu\, every whenu becomes a line of whakapapa\, every pattern a voice\, and every kete or kākahu a vessel for connection to whenua and whānau. At its heart is Whiria te Tāngata — the weaving together of people. \nWe warmly invite the community to Te Atamira to experience the wairua\, beauty\, and strength woven through each taonga\, and to witness how the strands of culture\, learning\, and place continue to bind us together. \n‍ \n“E kore e taea e te whenu kotahi ki te raranga i te whāriki kia mōhio tātou ki a tātou.” \n“The tapestry of understanding cannot be woven by one strand alone.”
